PUTNEY TOWN REGATTA

History

The Regatta was brought into being by a small band of rowing enthusiasts who met in 1910 under the chairmanship of R H Forster. It was first held in 1911, the year of the coronation of George V, with Bill Forster as President. He was followed in that position by other notable rowing men, among them being Herbert H Jelf and Steve Fairburn.

In a 1929 programme as members of the Committee and organisers of events were names well known in the professional world including Ayling, Cobb, Gibson, Newens and Phelps. Events included a Rum-Tum Handicap, a Watermen's Apprentices' Race, a Ladies' Four Oared Race and a School Boys' Swimming Race. There was fun in Leaders Gardens and two bands played. To complete the day at 10.00pm there was a Grand Firework Display held in the Fulham Embankment Gardens and viewed from the Putney Hard by the local residents.
