PUTNEY TOWN REGATTA
The Regatta was
brought into being by a small band of rowing enthusiasts who met in 1910 under
the chairmanship of R H Forster. It was first held in 1911, the year of the
coronation of George V, with Bill Forster as President. He was followed in that
position by other notable rowing men, among them being Herbert H Jelf and Steve Fairburn.
In a 1929
programme as members of the Committee and organisers of events were names well
known in the professional world including Ayling,
Cobb, Gibson, Newens and Phelps.
Events included a Rum-Tum Handicap, a Watermen's
Apprentices' Race, a Ladies' Four Oared Race and a School Boys' Swimming Race.
